The Friends Group was formed in 2008 with the aim of improving and maintaining the previously neglected and historically important cemetery. In 2009, we managed to acquire National Lottery funding through the Community Spaces initiative and this enabled us to vastly enhance the appearance of the cemetery. In subsequent years we were fortunate to obtain funding from Wem and Wem Rural Local Joint Committee, which allowed us to repair the chapel roof and the stained glass windows, and to carry out other external repairs.
Our principal financial supporters on an annual basis are Wem Parish Church, Wem Town Council, Wem Rural Council and the War Graves Commission. Other local churches also donate. In addition, we hold several fundraising events every year. These funds allow us to employ a grass cutting contractor and carry out other maintenance.
There are a variety of tasks for willing volunteers and offers of help would be really welcome. If you can assist even in a small way please get in touch. If you would like to volunteer, join our committee, make a donation or require more information please contact our Secretary, Judy Crichton on 01939 234489 or our Treasurer, Hazel Adkins on 01939 235559,
Information concerning the siting of graves can be found by contacting: Mrs Pat Edwards, 1 Eckford Park, Wem, SY4 5HL,
Anyone wishing to see inside the chapel please contact Judy or Hazel.
