URGENT APPEAL FOR FUNDS FOR LYCHGATE REPAIR

The lychgate structure has become extremely unsafe, is leaning precariously and is in need of urgent repair. We have been advised that there is rot in the oak sole plates and in the joints between the curved braces and the sole plates.  One of the braces has deflected and the whole structure has tipped towards the chapel. Because of the tipping the brick base to the gate has shifted on both sides.  The rotted base plates and braces urgently need to be replaced and there may also be rot in other parts of the structure.

A structural scaffold has now been installed and the tendering process has begun.  The Church Architect has advised that this work is likely to cost around £10,000+VAT. The Church is now actively fundraising for this project and the Friends of Whitchurch Road Cemetery are helping with this.

We urgently need help from the people of Wem and the surrounding area.
