2 Chronicles 7:13-14

When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command LOCUSTS to devour the land or send a PLAGUE among my people,

if my people, who are called by my name,

will HUMBLE themselves and PRAY and SEEK my face AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS,

then

I will HEAR from heaven,  and I will FORGIVE their sin and  and will HEAL their land

Our God is a God of love who cares for us deeply. He sent His only Son to suffer and die on a cross so that we might have forgiveness for our sin. But He is also a Holy God, whose commands, for our own good, cannot be ignored. When we ignore God’s commands, He withholds His protection and allows us to reap the consequences of our sin. However, if we repent and humble ourselves before God, He is ready to hear, forgive and heal.

We have a wonderful example which took place during the second World War, often referred to as the miracle of Dunkirk. When the British troops were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk by the German army, with no means of escape, the situation seemed hopeless. But King George the Sixth called for a National Day of Prayer so that the British people could turn to God in a spirit of repentance and plead for Divine help. People responded in their millions and went to Churches around Britain. Afterwards, 2 events happened which changed the outcome. First a violent storm arose in the Dunkirk region which grounded the Luftwaffe, preventing further attack on the British troops. Then, a great calm descended over the Channel, allowing hundreds of small boats to sail across and rescue 335,000 soldiers. The 9th June was held as a National Day of Thanksgiving.

Later Winston Churchill said, “I sometimes have a feeling of interference. I want to stress that. I have a feeling that some Guiding Hand has interfered........ I have a feeling that we have a Guardian because we have a great cause and we shall have that Guardian so long as we serve that cause faithfully.”

Currently, our world is helpless against the Corona Virus pandemic as well as vast swarms of locusts ravaging parts of Asia, the Middle East and Africa with potential dire consequences to follow. Let us learn the lessons and come before God in a spirit of repentance and humility and plead for His deliverance.

Let us repent for the sins of our nation and the world, for example:

* the fragmentation of FAMILY life with damaging consequences for children. God designed the family for our nurture and wellbeing.

* ignoring the needs of the poor, the marginalised, the homeless in our COMMUNITIES and also in the WORLD

* plundering the earth’s resources and damaging the ENVIRONMENT.

* GOVERNMENT - for all the laws made in the last 70 years which are in direct conflict with God’s commands and how he intended us to live. Previously Britain was rooted in modelling national life on God’s Word. Now there is a complete disregard and God’s Word is ignored. For example, experimentation on human embryos and abortion on demand which disregard God’s anger at the shedding of innocent blood, expressed many times in the Bible including in Ps 106:38.

Let us repent, repent, repent for repentance leads to RENEWAL and BLESSING. Pray that God will turn hearts and minds towards Him and His Son, Jesus, during this time and that His kingdom will grow and reflect His glory and power.
